We have implimented a service for the vision impaired that allows
connection of Braille terminals or the use of text-to-speech devices without
complicated screen reading software or fossile drivers.

This works by making an ASCII connection to one of our Unix hosts and
then we have various text based client programs for reading mail, accessing
Usenet News, or the web, transfering files, etc.

In order to do this we use an rlogin or telnet type connection from the
dialup communications server to our hosts. Not all national networks support
this and so we can't guarantee access in every city but it is available in most
major metropolitan areas.

For details please see:

http://www.eskimo.com/services/vision-impaired-ascii.html

Although we created this service for visually impaired people it can also
be used to allow classic computers that do not support TCP/IP or PPP
connections to access the Internet. So if you're wanting to get on the net
with your Vic-20, Apple II, or Atari-800, you can do it.

I presume you are one of these people who thinks the world ends just

Yup, I love the stuff where people put in their subject lines, visiting the
east coast, want to meet...

Its usually only when you have read half a page that you get the gist of
which country the east coast is on.

Why do some people so bitterly resent when, for practical or financial
reasons, something cannot be offered outside of the U.S.?

There was no call for this comment, and the restriction to the U.S. was
obviously done for some reason other than they simply didn't care a about
anyone outside America.

<splitting_hairs>Well, no, sorry and all that, but it wasn't obvious.
After all, this *is* a world-wide medium we are using, so we all need to
adjust our standpoints.

Exactly. The post should have spelt the restriction, if not in the
subject, at the very beginning.

It sounds similar to what the Chebucto Community Net has been offering
in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for about ten years, text-only accounts
with a customized version of Lynx as the "shell" and pine for accessing
email and usenet. They also offer PPP accounts for a higher fee (which
include a text account along with each PPP account).

I remember reading three or four years ago about one user who had, at that
time, upgraded to using a Commodore 64 so he could download and view GIF
images. Prior to that he had been connecting with a TRS-80 Model I
which didn't support the display of graphics or mixed case.

A unix/linux terminal? it sounds like that. been using those for a better
part of the last 20 years (linux is a bit more recent, but unix has been
around since the 1970's).

man, I miss fidonet and the bluewave offlien mail reader. totally accessible
in text only consoles. :)

if an ISP doesn't support telnet, they are locking themselves out of the
market. there is always a need for such. still, an ssh session is
considerably more secure and is very supported. telnet may be old, but its
still usful, only so long as you don't send login/password info over s
shared link.

ASU.edu had a free dialup service here for a long time. they recently (2
years ago) split it off as a non-profit (501-c3) organization called
aztecfreenet.org. they do much the same thing as described above. still, it
would be nice if they got smart and also offered ssh shells via the net
(for those with roaming net access). ah well, we can't have everything.
